"Theatre and Drama as Institutions
of the Construction of Identity"
PD Dr. Annette Pankratz
lays and performances negotiate identities; they recontextualise negotiations of other cultural institutions (e.g. law courts, the family, fashion), at the same time they reflect these acts of negotiation. In the theatre, society „watches itself acting“* and becomes aware of its processes of identity formation.
This covers mainly three areas:
(1) the performativity of theatre and drama as basis of its medialisations (which is often highlighted and problematised in meta-theatrical insertions);
(2) the offered values and standards of behaviour, which again are often presented as self-reflexive plays with roles and performances;
(3) the recontextualisation and re-negotiation of other media and institutions of identity constructions.
